Similar timelines already apply to some Middle-Eastern and African countries. Although approval still arrives within minutes for the majority of applicants, Austrian tour operators fear a spike in last-minute refusals and rebookings during the late-summer high season. According to Vienna Airport, U.S. arrivals account for roughly 12 % of long-haul traffic and generate an average spend of €290 per night—higher than any other overseas market. Industry body Österreich Werbung has launched a social-media campaign urging North-American travellers to “apply 35 days before departure.” Business-travel managers must also adjust internal protocols. Many global-mobility policies currently require ETIAS proof only five working days before departure; companies are now updating checklists so that employees submit screenshots of the authorisation at least two weeks ahead. Failure to do so could see travellers denied boarding at their point of embarkation, triggering costly itinerary changes. The change is linked to the impending roll-out of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), now scheduled for full deployment at Austrian airports in November. Officials say data gathered through the longer ETIAS questionnaire will preload into EES, reducing on-site biometric capture times. Yet airlines warn that the transitional overlap could still slow boarding procedures on transatlantic routes if passengers arrive at gates without the new documentation. Practical tips for travellers include double-checking passport validity (minimum three months beyond the planned exit date), keeping records of previous travel to conflict-affected countries, and using only the official EU portal to avoid third-party fees. Corporate HR teams are advised to circulate updated ETIAS guidance to U.S. assignees in Austria and to monitor further announcements, as Canada and Australia are expected to face the same 30-day window later this year.
