The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has unveiled a new digital service that allows UAE residence-visa holders who have remained outside the country for over 180 days to apply for a one-time re-entry permit through the ICP smart app and portal. According to ICP, applicants must upload a copy of their passport, Emirates ID and a brief explanation for the extended absence; once approved, they may enter the UAE within 30 days and complete normal residency formalities. The six-month rule—under which a residency visa automatically lapses if its holder stays abroad for more than 180 days—has long been a pain-point for HR and mobility managers, particularly those who rotate talent between multiple jurisdictions. The new facility provides a formal pathway to preserve employment residence status without forcing companies to launch an entirely new visa application. Immigration advisers say processing times are running at 48–72 hours and fees are comparable to those for standard entry permits. However, approvals remain discretionary and are being granted only once per visa cycle, so employers should still monitor travel patterns and maintain audit trails explaining extended assignments or medical absences. For businesses, the change reduces the risk of unexpected overstays abroad derailing projects or payroll continuity. Multinational firms are advised to update mobility policies to include the new re-entry option and to brief travelling staff on documentary requirements well before the 180-day threshold approaches. The ICP emphasised that all applications must be submitted while the employee is still outside the UAE; those who have already entered on a visit visa cannot convert that status retroactively. Mobility teams should therefore flag eligible cases early and coordinate with travel calendars to avoid last-minute complications.
