Demonstrations to close Tirol’s Fernpass route for two hours on 1 August, authorities urge travellers to reroute

The Tiroler Landesregierung has issued an extraordinary travel advisory after a citizens’ movement announced another demonstration against the €500 million “Fernpasspaket” road-tunnel project. The Fernpass federal road (B179), a key link between Germany’s A7 and Austria’s A12 motorways and a popular alternative for holidaymakers heading to Italy, will be sealed off in both directions from 09:45 to 12:00 on Saturday, 1 August. Parallel closures will affect the Hahntennjochstraße (L246) and several local feeder roads used as diversion corridors. The upcoming protest follows a first rally on 27 June that drew 700 participants but – thanks to heavy signage and police presence – caused limited congestion. This time, however, Tirol’s traffic department expects much heavier trans-Alpine flow because Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg start their school holidays on the same weekend. The province therefore advises drivers to use the Inntal–Brenner axis (A12/A13) or the Arlberg tunnel where possible. Logistics firms moving just-in-time consignments between southern Germany and western Austria risk delays of up to three hours, as trucks will be held back until after the marchers clear the carriageway. The freight association AISÖ recommends rescheduling departures to Friday night or Sunday morning. Long-distance coach operators, including FlixBus, have already issued re-routing notices to passengers. Behind the protest lies a complex mix of environmental and regional-development politics: NGOs under the Alpine Convention umbrella claim that the planned 4.8 km Scheiteltunnel encourages more transit traffic through a sensitive mountain ecosystem. The conservative-social-democrat provincial coalition counters that the tunnel, combined with new toll gates and a second bore for the Lermoos tunnel, will restore local quality of life by reducing stop-and-go traffic in villages. Until the permit fight is settled, weekend blockades are likely to continue, meaning travel-managers should monitor Tirol police bulletins fortnightly during the peak season.
