The advisory, issued on 28 July 2026 under reference A1888/26, states that the main north-south runway will be shut from 29 July at 05:30 UTC for surface rehabilitation and lighting upgrades. Work is scheduled during overnight windows to limit daytime disruption, but airlines will still need to reroute early-morning arrivals and late-evening departures. Austrian Airlines has pre-emptively retimed six flights to Frankfurt, London and Tel Aviv, while low-cost carrier Wizz Air has consolidated its Dortmund rotation into a larger Airbus A321neo. Airport operator Flughafen Wien AG says the east-west runway 11/29 will remain available, yet warns that single-runway operations reduce overall slot capacity by roughly 25 percent. Passengers with tight connections—especially those continuing to Eastern Europe on partner links—should monitor booking apps and allow extra ground time. The maintenance comes at the height of Austria’s summer travel peak and just days after EES queue times spiked to 35 minutes during the morning wave. Ground-handling agents have been instructed to prioritise EU transfer passengers to avoid missed Schengen connections, but non-EU travellers may face longer walks to remote stands as airlines juggle gate allocations. For mobility and travel managers the message is clear: audit itineraries involving Vienna between 29 July and 1 August, reissue tickets where feasible, and brief executives on possible bussing to aircraft. Companies with time-critical shipments should also note that some belly-hold freight will be re-routed via Linz or Bratislava. The airport emphasises that all work is weather-dependent; a prolonged thunderstorm forecast for 30 July could push completion into the weekend and prolong the reduced-capacity regime. Despite the inconvenience, VIE stresses that the upgrade is essential to meet the stricter performance requirements of the forthcoming Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) procedures, which demand higher-intensity runway lighting and more precise surface condition monitoring.
