Australia enters the summit keen to progress mutual recognition of digital identities and the next phase of the APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) programme, which Canberra wants to transition fully to a secure mobile app by 2027. King is also expected to push for alignment on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) targets that would support Qantas and Virgin Australia in meeting their 2050 net-zero pledges. The visit follows a thaw in bilateral ties: commercial flight frequencies between Australia and China have climbed back to 78 % of pre-pandemic levels, and Chinese group travel to Australia resumed in August after a three-year pause. Airlines and freight forwarders hope ministerial engagement will accelerate approvals for additional cargo slots and streamline permit renewals for ad-hoc charter flights serving the resources sector. For Australian exporters, smoother port and aviation links in the region could shave days off delivery schedules, while an expanded digital-border toolbox would cut documentation costs for frequent business travellers.
