The fault struck around 21:00 AEST on Thursday night, disabling the automated passport kiosks relied on to verify e-passports and match biometrics. With school-holiday traffic already building, ABF redeployed extra officers to process passengers by hand and triaged flights to minimise missed connections. The gates came back online just after 11:00 AEST on Friday, but only after wait times stretched well beyond an hour for some early-morning arrivals. Brisbane Airport, which expects a 6.1 percent year-on-year jump in international patrons between 18 September and 12 October, described the glitch as “ill-timed” yet praised ABF’s rapid response. Sydney Airport echoed those sentiments, noting that while SmartGate outages are rare, any technical failure quickly snowballs because more than 80 percent of adult foreign passport holders now use the kiosks. ABF has launched an investigation with its technology provider, but early indications point to a central server synchronisation error rather than a cyber-attack. Industry sources say the incident underscores the fragility of border-automation infrastructure, which has grown increasingly complex as biometric, health and advanced-passenger-information systems converge. For corporate travel teams the immediate takeaway is contingency planning: travellers entering Australia this spring should allow additional buffer time and carry printed copies of visas and itineraries in case further disruptions occur. Airlines may also tweak minimum connection windows for transiting passengers until ABF confirms a permanent fix.
