Avanti West Coast issued an unusually stark travel warning on Sunday, 20 September, advising passengers to "avoid travel to and from London Euston" until at least 16:00. Network Rail engineers were removing the damaged Oxhey Grange footbridge near Watford Junction, forcing a total blockade of the southern end of the West Coast Main Line. Until the structure is lifted clear and structural checks completed, long-distance services from Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and Glasgow are terminating at Milton Keynes or Rugby. Replacement buses are operating between Milton Keynes Central and Bedford, where passengers can pick up Thameslink services into London St Pancras. London Northwestern Railway is running a limited local shuttle on either side of the closure. Avanti is allowing tickets dated 20 September to be used on any service between 18 and 22 September, or to be refunded in full. For corporate commuters and field-service teams, the outage removes the UK’s busiest business-travel rail artery for most of the working day. Companies with time-sensitive meetings in the capital face multi-hour detours or costly last-minute domestic flights. Mobility managers are being urged to monitor staff welfare, as the alternative routes are expected to be "extremely busy" once the line reopens. The incident underlines the fragility of ground-access options for Heathrow and other London airports: passengers connecting at Euston normally transfer to the Elizabeth Line or Heathrow Express via Paddington, both of which are experiencing unrelated engineering works this week (see next story). Employers should remind travellers to build extra contingency into Monday morning itineraries and to keep digital rail tickets handy for flexible re-routing.
