Travellers heading to or from London Heathrow this week face reduced rail options after National Rail announced overnight track closures between London Paddington, Heathrow Airport and Reading from Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 September. The works, which affect both the Elizabeth line and Great Western Railway (GWR) main-line services, will see some lines closed from 22:00 each evening until the start of service the following morning. Elizabeth line trains will be pared back to two per hour between Abbey Wood and Heathrow Terminal 4, while services to Maidenhead will terminate at Paddington. Acton Main Line, West Ealing and Hanwell stations will have no service after 23:00. On the GWR network, key west-of-England trains—including the 17:50 from Penzance and the 20:23 from Swansea—will arrive at Paddington several minutes late, and the 23:14 Paddington–Oxford train will depart two minutes behind schedule. For business travellers, the headline impact is longer end-of-day transfer times to Heathrow hotels and a likely spike in ride-hail fares. Travel-management companies recommend allowing at least 30 extra minutes for evening departures and checking the National Rail journey planner before leaving central London. Airline crews based out of Heathrow have been advised to switch to earlier services or arrange dedicated road transfers. Network Rail says the closures are essential to renew signalling equipment ahead of the Christmas peak. The agency chose a mid-week window to avoid weekend leisure demand, but acknowledges the works coincide with high corporate travel volumes linked to London Fashion Week and the ASM trade fair at Olympia. Passengers with flexible tickets can use South Western Railway services to Waterloo and the Piccadilly Line as alternatives, but Heathrow Express will not be affected as it uses separate fast lines.
