Commercial aviation in south-eastern Poland was disrupted on 23 September when the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency (PANSA) placed both Lublin (LUZ) and Rzeszów-Jasionka (RZE) airports in a temporary ‘STOP ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE’ status. The ground-stop, which lasted approximately thirty minutes between 07:10 and 07:40 local time, was imposed to clear the airspace for Polish Air Force fighters responding to Russian drone activity just across the frontier in western Ukraine. According to a statement broadcast by Polskie Radio, the measure was coordinated through EUROCONTROL’s Network Manager and applied to all civil IFR traffic, affecting seven departing flights operated by LOT Polish Airlines, Ryanair and Wizz Air, as well as several inbound cargo rotations carrying e-commerce goods. Both airports resumed normal schedules before 08:00, but airlines warned passengers to expect residual delays throughout the morning wave. The incident is significant for global-mobility programmes because Rzeszów has evolved into Poland’s primary gateway for development-sector staff and contractors working in Ukraine; it also handles a growing share of pharma and high-tech freight. Lublin, meanwhile, serves numerous charter flights for agribusiness workers and SME exporters in the Lubelskie region. Any closure – even brief – can strand transferees and disrupt door-to-door corporate relocation timelines. Risk consultants suggest that companies route critical staff through Warsaw Chopin or Kraków-Balice when feasible, as these airports have greater diversion capacity and are less exposed to cross-border drone activity. Employers should also review travel-insurance wording to ensure force-majeure clauses cover costs incurred by military-related airspace restrictions. In the medium term, industry lobby BARIP predicts that regional carriers may seek government subsidies to offset higher operational risk, potentially influencing ticket prices on domestic feeder routes.
