Irish employment-permit processing dates refreshed: ICT permits now up-to-date but GEP backlog widens

The Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment (DETE) has updated its online dashboard of employment-permit processing dates, giving HR teams a real-time snapshot of where applications sit in the queue. As of 29 September, **Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) permits filed the same day are already being examined**, while new General Employment Permit (GEP) cases are stuck at 21 August. Critical Skills permits are 7 days behind receipt, but renewals and appeals continue to lag—stretching back to early July and mid-April respectively. The revised timeline is crucial for multinational employers planning Q4 inbound assignments. ICT permits—used heavily by tech and financial-services firms rotating staff into Irish HQs—have effectively no queue, reducing lead-time to the statutory minimum once documentation is complete. By contrast, the five-week GEP backlog could derail October start dates for mid-skill hires in hospitality, logistics and healthcare. DETE attributes the divergence to a summer surge in new hospitality roles and to the prioritisation of Trusted Partner and Critical Skills streams. Officials say additional caseworkers hired under the 2025 Roadmap are still in training, so pent-up demand may persist into November. Employers are urged to file complete applications and to avoid avoidable return requests that push files to the back of the line. For mobility teams the update provides actionable data for assignment calendars. Companies should: (1) schedule GEP-dependent hires no earlier than mid-October; (2) use ICTs where possible to bypass delays; and (3) diarise renewal windows now, given the July cut-off on the board. Where critical operational needs exist, internal transfers or contractor solutions may bridge gaps while permits work through the system. DETE will next refresh the dashboard on 6 October.
