Hong Kong unveils 24-hour transport network for rebuilt Huanggang border port
Hong Kong’s Transport Department on 7 October 2026 published the long-awaited transport blueprint for the reconstructed Huanggang Port, which is due to reopen later this month under a ‘co-operative inspection, one-time clearance’ model with Shenzhen. The plan introduces seven franchised bus routes, six green-minibus services and five 24-hour short-haul cross-boundary coach lines connecting the new clearance hall to major MTR hubs and business districts across Kowloon, Hong Kong Island and the New Territories. A dedicated bus lane along Fanling Highway and San Tin Highway will allow public-transport vehicles to bypass the congested San Tin interchange and reach the port directly. To manage surges, operators will station reserve buses in a buffer zone near the terminal that can be dispatched within two minutes during peak evening returns. Taxis—both urban “red” and New Territories “green” cabs—must collect numbered chits at the buffer to ensure orderly queuing, while pre-booked fleet taxis have a separate loading area. Real-time screens inside the port building will display next-bus information, and ‘service ambassadors’ will be on hand during the first weeks of operation. For travellers, the headline benefit is speed. The new biometric ‘collaborative e-Channel’ gates promise to cut combined Hong Kong-Shenzhen exit-entry processing from 30 minutes to roughly five, allowing daily commuters and business travellers to save valuable time. The 24-hour bus network means late-night flights at Chek Lap Kok can be reached without relying on private cars—welcome news for cost-conscious corporates. However, the Transport Department warns that traffic around the border is likely to be heavy in the initial months. Companies moving staff or goods across the boundary should stagger travel where possible and brief employees to register for the e-Channel service in advance via the Immigration Department mobile app. Logistics firms should also monitor the performance of the new dedicated goods-vehicle lanes once trial operations begin.
