Spain Extends Border Checks on Arrivals from Italy Until 22 October
Spain has formally prolonged the temporary re-introduction of Schengen internal-border controls at all Spanish airports and seaports receiving traffic from Italy. Order INT/1033/2026, published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado, extends the measure from 00:00 on 8 October to 24:00 on 22 October 2026. The Interior Ministry argues that the situation created by the large-scale irregular entries in Ceuta and the resulting risk of secondary movements within the Schengen Area continues to pose “a grave threat to public order and internal security.” Under the order, passengers arriving from Italy—regardless of nationality—may be subject to systematic document checks on arrival in Spain. The controls mirror those that Italy itself has been applying to travellers from Spain since August. According to the European Commission’s Schengen monitoring page, Spain joins Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and Switzerland in keeping selected internal borders under temporary control in October. Travellers are reminded that the checks can add 10-40 minutes to arrival formalities at Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat and main ferry ports, so airlines and ferry operators are advising passengers to allow extra time. For businesses, the extension means that corporate travellers shuttling between the two countries must continue to carry a valid passport or EU national ID card—and, in the case of third-country nationals, proof of Schengen stay entitlement—until at least 23 October. Employers with frequent Italy-Spain rotations (consultants, engineers, flight crews, maritime staff) should brief personnel on possible spot checks and factor the delay into schedules. Immigration counsel recommend carrying assignment letters or A1 social-security certificates to avoid questions about purpose of stay. The measure can be renewed in further two-week blocs, but must be notified to the Commission each time. With Italian controls also extended, mobility managers should plan for rolling restrictions to persist through the fourth quarter. Any future lifting will depend on migration flows from North Africa easing and bilateral talks between Madrid and Rome showing progress.
