France extends Schengen border checks with Switzerland until 30 April 2027
Business travellers driving or taking the train across the Franco-Swiss frontier should prepare for another six months of passport inspections. According to the European Commission’s updated list of temporary Schengen controls, Paris has notified Brussels that it will prolong internal border controls from 1 November 2026 through 30 April 2027. The measure covers all French land, air and sea borders, explicitly including the land frontier with the Swiss Confederation. France first re-introduced systematic checks in 2015 after the terrorist attacks in Paris and has renewed them every six months since. The latest justification cites a “continued serious threat to public order and internal security”, rising antisemitic violence, migrant-smuggling networks and major events such as the Paris Peace Forum in November. Travellers can therefore expect spot checks of identity documents, vehicle searches and longer queues at road crossings as well as at Geneva Cornavin and Basel SBB rail stations. For companies that shuttle staff or goods between France and Switzerland the decision translates into extra buffer time for deliveries, higher costs for cross-border shuttles and possible delays to just-in-time production lines. HR and mobility teams should also remind assignees to carry a passport or national ID rather than relying on driver’s licences. Employers making use of the French-Swiss frontier worker system (frontaliers) may want to consider flexible working hours or remote-work days on Mondays and Fridays when queues are heaviest. Legal experts do not expect the controls to affect the right of EU and Swiss citizens to move freely, but they warn that Schengen visa-holders could face more detailed questioning. The Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) said it is coordinating closely with French authorities to keep freight moving and avoid tailbacks on the A1 and A35 motorways. Looking ahead, the extension overlaps with the EU’s planned May 2027 full rollout of the Entry/Exit System (EES). Unless France drops the checks earlier, travellers might face a double layer of procedures next spring: a biometric EES registration followed by a French police inspection. Mobility managers are advised to monitor further Commission updates, which are published roughly every two weeks.
