Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) has suspended all passenger services through the Chop–Stráž border crossing for 48 hours while engineers carry out urgent track repairs at the strategically important Chop hub. In a notice released mid-day on 12 October 2026, the State Border Guard Service and the Ukrainian National News agency warned travelers that all trains between Ukraine, Slovakia and the Czech Republic are cancelled from 12 to 13 October. The work affects the overnight Kyiv–Prague through cars as well as regional services feeding into Slovak operator ZSSK and Czech operator České dráhy. The Bratislava–Chop train scheduled for 21:41 on 12 October has already been withdrawn, and Czech Rail confirmed that through-tickets issued for the Košice–Prague “Railjet” via Chop will be refunded or re-routed. Chop is the principal railway gateway linking Ukraine to Central Europe’s Schengen area, and the outage highlights the fragility of east-west surface corridors that many multinationals have been using in place of suspended air links. The Czech Ministry of Transport advised employers moving technicians or humanitarian staff to rebook via the Medyka-Przemyśl land crossing in Poland or to route via air from Lviv to Prague. Ukrainian Railways expects to finish relaying points and updating signalling by the early hours of 14 October, after which normal service should resume. Nevertheless, companies with mobile staff are urged to monitor updates and allow extra transit time at alternative border posts, where queues may swell because of diverted traffic. Travel-risk consultants note that the episode underscores the importance of contingency planning for land evacuations and supply routes amid the ongoing conflict. Firms with assignees in Ukraine should keep their crisis-management protocols current and ensure that employees register travel itineraries in internal tracking systems.
