Ukraine suspends cross-border trains at Chop, disrupting Czech–Slovak rail corridor
Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine’s state railway, has halted all passenger services through Chop station from 12 to 13 October to allow emergency track repairs, temporarily severing one of Central Europe’s busiest international rail arteries. The closure affects the Bratislava–Chop overnight service and all onward connections to Prague that normally carry up to 1,200 passengers a day, including migrant workers and students travelling under discounted Visegrád Pass schemes. According to a notice by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, no trains will cross the Chop–Stráž/Sobrance border checkpoint during the 48-hour window. Travellers heading for Czechia are being re-routed via the Žilina–Bohumín corridor or advised to use long-distance buses, though coach operators report many services are already sold out because of the Czech school holidays. České dráhy has activated an agreement with Slovak rail to accept Prague–Kosice tickets on alternative routings at no extra cost. Business mobility is particularly affected: IT outsourcing firms in Brno and Ostrava rely on the Chop connection to rotate Ukrainian staff who hold temporary protection visas in Czechia. HR departments have been instructed to issue remote-work waivers for the affected days to avoid labour-law breaches linked to overstays. Meanwhile, logistics companies warn that mail-order parcels sent by rail container from Prague’s Malešice terminal will be delayed up to 72 hours, potentially hitting e-commerce delivery promises. Czech border police have taken advantage of the lull to rehearse EES biometric enrolment procedures on the Slovak frontier, installing mobile kiosks at the Hodonín–Holíč road crossing. Officials say the unplanned break provides a real-world stress test before the EU’s new digital entry ledger becomes mandatory next year. Ukrzaliznytsia says track renewals are part of a €32 million project co-financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to bring the Chop hub up to TEN-T interoperability standards, paving the way for future gauge--changing equipment that could allow through-running standard-gauge trains from Prague to Uzhhorod by 2028.
