After a six-month outage, IRCC’s online Application Status Tracker is live again – and with an expanded slate of programs. Applicants with acknowledgement-of-receipt letters can now log in to view real-time progress on eligibility, medical exams, background checks and biometrics for Express Entry, family sponsorship, study-permit, work-permit and visitor-visa files. Each section indicates whether action is required, providing a clear to-do list that can pre-empt costly delays. The tracker complements – but does not replace – generic processing-time tables. By showing whether, say, security screening has even started, it helps applicants and employers distinguish a routine queue wait from a stalled file that may warrant a web-form enquiry or MP intervention. IRCC says account data refreshes daily, and access is limited to the principal applicant, sponsor, authorised representatives or designated individuals with written consent. For global-mobility teams coordinating large cohorts of foreign workers or students, the relaunch reduces the email traffic generated by anxious assignees. HR staff should ensure new hires receive their Unique Client Identifier and application number as soon as the AOR arrives, together with step-by-step login instructions via GCKey or a Sign-In Partner. Caveats remain: the tool only becomes usable once IRCC has deemed an application complete, and it offers no direct messaging channel to officers. Nevertheless, immigration lawyers praise the transparency boost, noting that section-level detail often surfaces missing documents early enough to correct them inside normal processing windows. Companies with service-level agreements tied to permit issuance dates may want to integrate tracker milestones into their project dashboards. Doing so could flag downstream risks – such as onboarding delays – well before a scheduled start date slides.
