Drone scare triggers three air-raid alerts in eastern Poland; Warsaw disputes Lithuanian timeline
Residents of Lublin and Podkarpackie voivodeships received three Regional Security Centre (RCB) alerts between the morning of 19 October and the early hours of 20 October 2026 as Polish air-defence radars tracked Russian drone strikes near the Ukrainian border. Commercial flights at Lublin and Rzeszów–Jasionka airports were briefly suspended, but the Operational Command (DORSZ) later confirmed that no object violated Polish airspace. The alerts came amid a diplomatic back-and-forth with Lithuania after Vilnius’ General Staff published a timeline claiming a drone that crashed on 18 October was first detected “30–40 km inside Poland” before crossing into Lithuania. Poland’s defence ministry “categorically denied” the assertion, stating its radar picture shows no incursion and urging media not to spread “false speculation.” Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz told PAP that the device was “most likely Ukrainian” and may have been a smuggling drone rather than a weaponised UAV, but an investigation continues. The incident has nonetheless reignited debate over gaps in the joint Polish-Lithuanian air picture along the Suwałki Corridor—a critical corridor for NATO reinforcement. For international assignees and air-cargo operators, the practical fallout has so far been limited to short-lived flight diversions, but security advisers warn that more frequent alerts could disrupt schedules at the crucial Rzeszów hub used for aid shipments to Ukraine. Companies with staff in eastern Poland should review shelter-in-place protocols and ensure that mobile phones are enrolled for RCB warnings. Politically, the episode underlines growing pressure on Warsaw and Vilnius to finalise data-sharing agreements and possibly integrate their radar feeds under NATO’s Air Policing framework. Failure to do so could see continued confusion over responsibility when unmanned systems stray near or across borders.
