EU List Confirms Austria’s Internal Schengen Border Checks to Remain Until March 2027
The European Commission’s running register of temporary Schengen border-control notifications, updated on 21 October 2026, reconfirms that Austria will maintain checks on its land and river borders with Slovakia and on land borders with Czechia, Hungary and Slovenia until at least 15 March 2027. Vienna first re-introduced the controls in September in response to rising irregular migration along the Western-Balkan route and broader security concerns stemming from the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. For business travellers, that means continued spot checks on major motorway crossings such as A4 Nickelsdorf-Hegyeshalom (HU) and A5 Drasenhofen-Mikulov (CZ). Although EU citizens and holders of residence permits can still use biometric e-gates where available, companies should build extra time into ground-transport schedules and remind non-EU staff to carry both passports and valid Austrian ID cards or Aufenthaltstitel. Logistics firms are already feeling the impact: the Freight Forwarders Association (ZV) estimates waiting times of up to 45 minutes for trucks during morning peaks—costing approximately €120 per vehicle in lost productivity. The Smart Border Austria digital pre-clearance system introduced last month for commercial cargo can mitigate delays, but participation is mandatory only at six crossings so far. Politically, Austria’s decision remains controversial in Brussels, where free movement is a core EU principle. However, with Germany, Denmark and Italy exercising similar measures, experts predict the Council will focus on harmonising risk-assessment criteria rather than forcing a rollback. In the meantime, global-mobility teams should monitor further notifications: under the Schengen Borders Code, Vienna must submit a detailed risk report every six months to justify any extension beyond March.
