Irish Times guide outlines visa, tax and housing hurdles for US professionals relocating to Ireland
The Irish Times published a practical relocation guide on 21 October aimed at US professionals eyeing roles in Ireland’s expanding tech and life-sciences sectors. The piece highlights that non-EU assignees must secure the correct employment permit before arrival and register with Immigration Service Delivery within 90 days, or risk fines and eventual deportation. Tax is the second major hurdle. While Ireland’s 12.5 percent corporate rate is famous, personal income tax can reach 52 percent when Universal Social Charge and PRSI are added. Newcomers must apply for a Personal Public Service (PPS) number—often the bottleneck for payroll activation. Housing remains a pain-point: Dublin rents average €2,300 per month for a two-bed apartment, and supply remains tight despite a record 32,000 new units completed last year. Many employers therefore offer “rent caps” or temporary hotel accommodation for the first two months. The guide recommends that transferees collect original diploma transcripts and police-clearance certificates before departure, as DETE sometimes requests them even after a permit is issued. It also advises spouses to research labour-market access: partners of CSEP holders receive a Stamp 1G with open-market work rights, but spouses of GEP holders do not. Finally, the article notes that US citizens can drive for up to one year on their home licence but must exchange it thereafter; delays at the National Driver Licence Service currently average six weeks, so early booking is essential.
