The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) has released its weekly update on employment-permit processing times, giving multinational employers fresh visibility on how long it will take to secure work permission for new hires and assignees. As of 21 October 2026 DETE is now opening Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) files received on 13 October, General Employment Permit files from 17 September and—in a welcome surprise for global mobility teams—new Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) applications dated as recently as 20 October. Renewal applications across all permit types remain back-dated to 5 August, while reviews and appeals are still on files from late April. Ireland operates a strictly date-of-receipt queue and does not ordinarily offer expediting, so the published timetable is the only reliable guide for HR planning. The leap forward in the ICT queue will be particularly helpful for multinationals moving existing staff into their Irish entities for project work, as assignments often hinge on short lead-times. The slower progress in the General category underlines continuing pressure on DETE resources and the popularity of Ireland’s post-pandemic labour market. Companies are advised to build at least six weeks into their mobilisation timelines for CSEP cases and considerably longer for General Permits, which require a labour-market test. DETE reminds sponsors that incomplete files are returned to the back of the queue, so meticulous document collation remains essential. From a policy perspective, the update is in line with the Government’s 2025-29 talent strategy, which prioritises high-skill migration while tightening salary thresholds to deter wage dumping. With record vacancy rates in technology, life sciences and financial services, the processing bulletin will be closely watched by relocation managers looking to staff Irish hubs ahead of the 2027 OECD minimum-tax changes.
