German Embassy in Abuja to suspend visa processing for two months
The German Embassy in Nigeria announced on 23 October that its Abuja visa section will shut down from 1 December 2026 until 31 January 2027 “for urgent renovation and IT upgrades.” During the eight-week closure, all Schengen and national-visa applicants will have to submit files through VFS Global in Lagos or, for certain long-term categories, lodge applications at Germany’s missions in Accra (Ghana) or Cotonou (Benin). According to embassy officials, the downtime is needed to install secure booths that comply with the Federal Foreign Office’s new biometric standards and to connect Abuja to Germany’s Consular Services Portal, which handles digital visa applications worldwide. The portal roll-out has already reduced appointment lead times by 35 % at other African posts, but requires upgraded server rooms and fibre-optic links that the current chancery lacks. Nigeria is Germany’s fourth-largest African source market for students and skilled workers; last year more than 9,000 national visas were issued in Abuja alone. Mobility advisers warn that diverting that volume to Lagos could lengthen queues there to six weeks unless extra staffing is dispatched. Multinational companies moving engineers under Germany’s Blue-Card scheme should therefore initiate filings immediately and consider routing staff via EU consulates in neighbouring countries if travel dates are fixed. Applicants who already hold confirmed December appointments in Abuja will receive automatic re-scheduling emails, the embassy said. Paying for premium lounge access in Lagos or using group submissions can shorten in-person time, but all biometrics must still be given in person. Business travellers needing short-notice visas may find it quicker to apply for multi-entry visas at the French or Dutch consulates if their travel pattern permits. The shutdown underscores the infrastructure gap many German missions face as Berlin races to digitalise consular workflows and meet the security rules of the EU Entry/Exit System, now slated for 2027.
