Typhoon Champi: Airlines waive change fees on Hong Kong – Taiwan routes
Hong Kong-bound and outbound travellers found their Friday itineraries up-ended as Super Typhoon Champi skirted Taiwan on 23 October. In anticipation of severe winds around the Taiwan Strait, multiple carriers pre-emptively cancelled or rescheduled services between Hong Kong International Airport and Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung. Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airlines and low-cost carrier HK Express each published storm waivers, but the fine print varies. Cathay’s agent bulletin covers tickets issued on or before 21 October for travel on 23–24 October, with one free re-booking or re-routing request permitted before the original departure and lodged no later than 24 October. Hong Kong Airlines’ waiver applies to a list of specific flight numbers on 23 October; passengers must re-book or refund by 30 October and pay any fare difference. HK Express is allowing date changes within a two-week window but has not publicly confirmed whether fare differentials are waived. RTHK reported at least 14 EVA Air cancellations and 10 China Airlines cancellations on Thursday night, highlighting the knock-on effect for interline and codeshare partners. Business travellers with tight connection windows should therefore verify not only flight status but also whether their ticket falls inside the eligibility windows of each airline’s policy. Practical tips for corporate mobility teams include: keep screenshots of carrier waivers, check whether no-show penalties still apply, and warn assignees transiting Hong Kong that even unaffected flights can suffer crew-routing delays when a typhoon disrupts Taipei’s air-traffic flow. Employers who rely on the Hong Kong–Taipei shuttle for same-day meetings may wish to activate virtual-meeting contingencies; Cathay has already hinted that further operational adjustments are possible if Champi’s track changes. The episode is another reminder that autumn typhoons remain a structural risk to Greater Bay Area mobility. Companies should revisit their travel-risk playbooks, ensure employees are enrolled in airline alert systems, and clarify which cost centre absorbs extra hotel nights when weather-related disruptions strike.
