Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) became the first German airport to secure Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Level 4 on 26 January. The step moves the capital’s hub beyond measuring its own direct emissions to incorporating suppliers, airlines and ground-handlers in a science-based reduction pathway.
The certification follows a year-long audit by ACI Europe and recognises initiatives such as 4.5 million kWh in annual electricity savings from LED retrofits, 120 new airside e-charging points and large rooftop photovoltaic arrays on parking structures. CEO Aletta von Massenbach said Level 4 supports BER’s goal of cutting total operational emissions 65 % versus 2010 by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2045.

For mobility managers the practical upside is resilience against future green levies: airports at higher ACA levels are better positioned to avoid surcharges being discussed in Brussels for high-carbon hubs. Airlines can also count scope-1 ground-handling emissions reductions achieved at BER towards their CORSIA reporting.
The airport will now draft joint action plans with logistics companies and catering suppliers, pushing sustainability requirements further down the mobility value chain. ACI Europe called the award “a lighthouse example” for other mid-sized EU hubs.
