Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL) has warned passengers to arrive three hours before departure after a 1,700 m² expansion of its central security zone went live on 30 March. The new scanners are designed to lift throughput in the long term, but the switchover has created a bottleneck that slashed peak-hour capacity this week. For low-cost carriers Ryanair and Wizz Air—which together operate over 80 percent of CRL flights—the delays jeopardise tight 25-minute turn-arounds and could cascade into network-wide knock-on delays. Retail concessionaires complain that passengers stuck in security lines are spending less airside, undermining a crucial revenue stream that subsidises landing fees. The timing is delicate: the airport only narrowly escaped insolvency last winter and is counting on strong summer yields. Management says teething problems should resolve within “a couple of weeks,” but unions predict congestion could persist if software calibration of the new equipment drags on. Business travellers using Charleroi as a low-fare alternative to Brussels Airport should add buffer time or consider rail-to-flight connections via Brussels-Midi. Companies with strict travel-policy SLAs may need temporary waivers for on-time-arrival KPIs.
