Left-Rhine rail line diversions hit Cologne–Koblenz services during July works
Business travellers in the Rhine corridor face a week of detours and bus replacements after Deutsche Bahn (DB) began urgent track works on the left-bank main line between Cologne and Koblenz at 21:00 on 2 July. Until 10 July long-distance trains will bypass the key hubs of Cologne Hbf, Bonn Hbf, Remagen and Andernach, stopping instead at Cologne Messe/Deutz and—in the case of Intercity services—Bonn-Beuel.

International visitors caught up in the disruption may also need to adjust arrival ports or extend their stays; VisaHQ streamlines the process of obtaining or amending Schengen business visas and offers real-time guidance for Germany through its portal at https://www.visahq.com/germany/—saving companies time when travel plans change at the last minute.

Why now? The works are a pre-condition for DB’s large-scale “corridor renovation” of the Troisdorf–Wiesbaden route later this summer. By upgrading the alternative left-Rhine line first, the operator hopes to route diverted traffic more reliably when the main corridor is closed from late July until year-end. Impact on commuters and companies: Regional services RE5, RB26 and RB48 are either curtailed or fully cancelled on the affected section, with DB laying on express buses that add 30–60 minutes to typical journey times. Employers with staff commuting between Cologne, Bonn and the wider Mittelrhein region are advising remote work or flexible hours next week. Logistics companies have been warned of heavier HGV volumes on the already congested A 61 as travellers switch from rail to road. Mitigation tips: • Check DB Navigator for real-time platform changes; replacement buses depart from designated forecourts, not the usual bus bays. • Project teams travelling to Bonn can often save time by booking ICE trains to Siegburg/Bonn and finishing the last leg by Stadtbahn. • Hold-ticket arrangements for season-pass holders mean that journeys can be re-routed via Düsseldorf without extra charge. Local authorities also urge motorists to factor in the ongoing full closure of the Nordbrücke, whose long-term reconstruction has already funnelled thousands of additional riders onto the rail network.
