The move comes after CUPE Local 8125 announced that 4,400 flight attendants could legally walk out as early as 2 August, squarely targeting one of Canada’s busiest leisure and business-travel periods. Under the policy, passengers can rebook to any WestJet-operated flight within 30 days or convert bookings to travel credit. WestJet Encore turboprop services and codeshares remain unaffected. Management said negotiations are “constructive”, but the 99.4 % strike-mandate vote has forced contingency planning. With corporate travel demand finally back to pre-pandemic levels, a strike could strand thousands of business travellers heading to client meetings and the first wave of FIFA World Cup venue-inspection delegations. Rival carrier Air Canada has limited spare capacity, meaning last-minute re-accommodation options will be scarce. Companies with mobility programmes should advise employees to monitor itineraries, secure refundable hotel rates, and consider routing through U.S. hubs if the walkout proceeds. Travel-management firms are already flagging potential cost spikes for charter aircraft and holding additional seats on regional partners. The dispute centres on scheduling and profit-sharing; analysts note that resolving it swiftly is critical for WestJet’s reputation ahead of the lucrative winter sun season. The airline has hinted at “minimum network” operations using management crews, but labour experts doubt this would cover even half the schedule.
