Berlin Brandenburg Airport quietly switched on a new live-data service on 27 July, giving passengers real-time visibility of security, check-in and—crucially—the biometric Entry/Exit System (EES) queues that have plagued non-EU travellers since April. The dashboard, developed by analytics start-up FlightQueue, shows median wait times updated every five minutes and colour-codes peak congestion periods. At launch, BER reported 7-minute average security waits and ‘fast’ EES processing, but the tool flagged a potential afternoon spike when eight long-haul arrivals overlap. Why it matters: With Berlin schools on holiday, the airport expects more than 90,000 passengers on the coming weekend alone. Corporate travel managers can now advise staff on optimal arrival times—FlightQueue’s “When to Arrive” calculator recommends 90 minutes for domestic and 150 minutes for international departures—reducing the risk of missed flights and duty-of-care incidents. The feed can also be integrated into global mobility apps via API, allowing relocation teams to push alerts to inbound assignees. EES context: Germany’s Federal Police supports the initiative, saying crowd-sourced wait data helps allocate officers to bottlenecks. Similar dashboards are expected at Frankfurt and Munich once API agreements are signed. Airports Council International Europe has urged other Schengen gateways to adopt open-data solutions to maintain throughput while biometric checks bed in. Practical implications: HR and travel departments should update pre-trip emails with the FlightQueue link and remind non-EU staff to budget extra time for their first biometric enrolment. For time-critical journeys, BER’s paid fast-track lane (EUR 9) remains available but is capacity-controlled. Companies with large assignee groups may negotiate bulk fast-track slots via their TMCs. Looking ahead, FlightQueue plans to add ETIAS (Electronic Travel Information and Authorisation System) risk-alerts before the scheme’s go-live at the end of 2026, further strengthening Germany’s position as a test-bed for smart border technology.
