Fire Near Track Halts Milan–Chiasso Cross-Border Rail Corridor

Evening commuters between Italy and Switzerland faced major disruption on 27 July 2026 when a brush fire broke out alongside the busy Milan–Chiasso line near Monza. According to infrastructure manager Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), train traffic was suspended from 18:00 and only fully restored at 20:00 after firefighters contained the blaze and track inspectors declared the area safe. The Milan–Chiasso corridor is a strategic artery of the EU’s Rhine-Alpine freight and passenger network, linking Lombardy’s industrial hub with Lugano and Zurich. During the two-hour blockade, long-distance EuroCity services to Basel and regional TILO cross-border commuter trains were either cancelled or terminated prematurely at Milan Centrale. RFI reported delays of up to 100 minutes and several trainsets being diverted via Gallarate-Luino, adding pressure to already congested summer timetables. While no injuries were reported, the incident underscores the vulnerability of transalpine mobility to climate-related events. Lombardy’s civil-protection agency said the blaze was likely sparked by a combination of 38 °C temperatures and gusty winds drying roadside vegetation. Trenitalia has since reminded passengers of its compensation policy for delays exceeding 60 minutes, while logistics operators warned of knock-on effects on just-in-time deliveries into northern Italy. The quick reopening prevented overnight freight backups, but supply-chain experts note that even short suspensions on the Rhine-Alpine corridor can ripple through European production schedules. Multinationals with plants in Brianza and Ticino are therefore reassessing contingency routings and the use of combined rail-road services in peak fire-risk periods.
