In a long-anticipated move to modernize Canadian travel documents, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Service Canada on 28 July unveiled a nationwide online portal that lets most adult Canadians renew their passports entirely over the web. At a Vancouver press conference, Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab said the service is now “open 24-7” to anyone whose current passport was issued within the last 15 years, was received after the age of 16, and whose home and mailing address are in Canada. The expansion follows a two-year pilot that quietly climbed from processing just ten applications a day in late 2024 to roughly 2,000 per day earlier this year. IRCC officials say the digital workflow slashes average renewal times by allowing applicants to upload photos, pay fees and receive real-time status updates without a paper form or an in-person visit. It is expected to ease pressure on brick-and-mortar passport offices, which were flooded with pent-up post-pandemic demand in 2025, and to help meet Ottawa’s new “30 days or free” service-standard guarantee introduced in March. For employers and global-mobility managers, the change removes a persistent administrative hurdle. Employees who discover an expiring passport shortly before an overseas assignment can now submit a renewal from home and keep their existing passport until the new document is approved—crucial for travellers who need to show valid ID at domestic checkpoints while they wait. The system also flags common mistakes instantly, reducing the risk of last-minute refusals that can derail business trips. IRCC stresses that the online channel is optional and that regular in-person and mail-in services remain available, especially for applicants who need a name change, are replacing a lost passport, or live abroad. Nevertheless, the government expects digital renewals to become the default for more than one million routine applications a year. It is already working on the next phase: a fully online first-time passport application that would integrate biometric capture at Service Canada centres. Practical tips: applicants should have a digital passport photo ready (JPEG < 5 MB, 50 mm × 70 mm), their current passport, and a credit card. They must consent to automatic cancellation of the existing passport once the renewal is submitted. Processing fees remain unchanged at $160 for a 10-year adult passport, and urgent pick-up options are not yet available online.
