CyAlert contractor admits software glitch after wildfire; reliability upgrades promised before tourist peak
GCC Computers Ltd—the vendor behind Cyprus’ national emergency-text platform CyAlert—confirmed on 29 July that a software fault delayed evacuation messages during the 28 July Kalo Chorio wildfire near Larnaca. The episode forced the precautionary evacuation of Agia Anna and Psevdas villages and reignited scrutiny of crisis-communication tools crucial for resident and visitor safety. In a statement, the firm said the fault surfaced during CyAlert’s first real-world deployment and has since been patched. Additional server redundancy and automated failover protocols will be rolled out “within days” to guarantee 99.99 % uptime ahead of August’s tourist surge, when the island hosts close to one million foreign visitors. The Transport Ministry has demanded a full incident report and will stage a live re-test next week involving mobile networks Cytamobile-Vodafone, Epic and PrimeTel. Hoteliers welcomed the move: “Our biggest concern is timely information for guests who may not follow Greek-language media,” said Anna Charalambous, duty manager at a Larnaca beach resort that hosted 600 German package tourists during the blaze. From a mobility perspective, a reliable cell-broadcast system is vital for multinational employers tasked with tracking staff in real time against unfolding hazards—be it wildfire, earthquake or geopolitical flare-up. Trip-approval workflows in most global mobility platforms reference government alert schemes; any perception of unreliability can result in higher travel-risk ratings and increased insurance premiums. Corporate security advisers recommend temporarily adding SMS and app-based push notifications from private providers such as Everbridge or Crisis24 while CyAlert stabilisation work continues. HR directors should also collect non-Cypriot mobile numbers from short-term assignees, as local SIM registration rules can delay onboarding to national alert services.
