The ‘smart corridor’ in Terminal 5 uses facial recognition linked to Advance Passenger Information and Border Force databases to verify identity on the move, promising to cut average arrival processing to 30 seconds. The programme – first detailed in Home Office Economic Note HO EN 1003 – completed live trials with British and Australian nationals earlier this summer. From 3 August it becomes operational for all B5JSSK passport holders (Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea) and will expand to EU travellers by year-end. Passengers walk down a dedicated lane where high-definition cameras capture their image, cross-match it with the travel manifest and issue an automated clearance signal before the baggage hall. Border Force officers remain on hand to pull aside anyone flagged for secondary checks. The system also integrates with the ETA database, meaning travellers arriving under the new authorisation scheme are verified simultaneously. Heathrow’s detailed plan projects a 40 % increase in peak-hour throughput once all terminals adopt the technology. For global mobility teams the key benefit is predictability: companies staging same-day meetings in London can now plan on 15–20 minutes landside arrival for eligible staff, reducing the need for overnight travel. However, biometric enrolment is mandatory – passengers must have previously provided a high-quality passport chip image or will be diverted to staffed desks. Data protection impact assessments confirm that facial data are retained for no more than 24 hours unless a security alert is raised. The Contactless Corridor is a flagship element of the government’s 2025 ‘Future Borders’ strategy and positions the UK alongside Dubai and Singapore as early adopters of walk-through immigration technology. Gatwick and Manchester airports are scheduled to follow in 2027.
