According to The Associated Press, trains ground to a halt around Zwolle, Deventer and Amersfoort, with National Rail (NS) gradually restarting limited service by mid-afternoon. Belgian rail operator SNCB/NMBS warned that its Brussels–The Hague InterCity service would terminate at Roosendaal for the rest of the day, while Thalys (rebranded Eurostar) re-timed several Brussels–Amsterdam high-speed runs. Business travellers heading to Rotterdam’s port and Eindhoven’s tech hub faced detours via Antwerp by coach. ProRail spokesperson Joke van der Cruysen said investigators are preserving evidence—including fingerprints—from removed objects, calling the coordinated action “unprecedented in scope.” No group has claimed responsibility. Dutch police have appealed for dash-cam footage of a dark-coloured van seen near tracks outside Deurne. The incident coincided with the Dutch government’s annual Budget Day ceremonies, raising speculation about political motives. Security services in Belgium heightened surveillance of cross-border rail infrastructure, though Interior Minister Anneleen Van Bossuyt stressed there was “no concrete threat” on Belgian soil. For multinational firms operating a Benelux ‘hub-and-spoke’ workforce, the outage exposed the fragility of rail-dependent mobility programmes. HR departments scrambled to authorise rental cars, while some consultants resorted to video links for Hague-based client meetings.
