Poland’s National Revenue Administration (KAS) and Border Guard have warned logistics operators that freight traffic entering Poland through the busy Medyka–Shehyni crossing on the Ukrainian border will be restricted from 16 September 2026 until further notice. Ongoing construction is forcing a partial closure of the approach road to the checkpoint, reducing inbound capacity to a single lane. The Medyka gateway handles around 1,200 heavy-goods vehicles (HGVs) each day and is the principal corridor for EU–Ukraine road freight. Forwarders already coping with wartime rerouting and veterinary inspections now face an additional bottleneck. Officials have not given a completion date, saying the works are part of a larger modernisation project to expand scanning facilities and add a secure parking zone funded by EU cohesion money. Customs brokers report that queuing times for trucks entering Poland doubled to an average of six hours during the first morning of the restriction, while empty outbound traffic and passenger cars were unaffected. Some carriers are diverting to Korczowa–Krakivets or Dorohusk–Yahodyn, although those posts have limited capacity for ADR and oversized cargo. The construction coincides with peak autumn exports of Ukrainian grain, metals and timber, raising concern that delays could inflate transport costs just as rail capacity remains tight. Polish exporters shipping machinery, white goods and FMCG into Ukraine are also likely to encounter schedule slippage and higher demurrage at trans-loading yards in Przemyśl and Rzeszów. Supply-chain managers are being advised to pre-lodge transit declarations in the EU’s NCTS system, build extra dwell time into delivery windows and monitor live queue data on Granica.gov.pl. Drivers should carry adequate rest provisions, as the temporary traffic arrangement removes access to the on-site canteen and washrooms on the Polish side.
