Commuters in the Saarland were able to board Saarbahn’s S1 line again from Sunday morning after a fresh 24-hour strike by the German Train Drivers’ Union (GDL) came to an end. The operator cautioned, however, that an emergency schedule will continue on weekdays until further notice because negotiations remain deadlocked. Under the interim plan, tram-trains run only during peak hours between Sarreguemines (France) and Lebach, with buses covering other slots. Corporate sites around Saarbrücken’s Science Park and the Ford engine plant have told staff to expect longer door-to-desk times and consider car-pooling where possible. The dispute is unusual in that GDL is fighting for a stand-alone collective agreement for Saarbahn’s new TramTrain driver cohort; management argues existing public-sector accords are sufficient. If talks fail, another strike could hit as early as the second week of October—prime conference season at the Saarmesse venue. Companies hosting visitors should therefore keep rail disruption clauses in their travel policies and budget extra for taxi vouchers on high-impact days. The episode is also a reminder that even small regional walkouts can undermine Germany-wide multimodal itineraries, especially for travellers connecting from long-distance ICE services in Mannheim.
