US–Iran standoff keeps UAE on high alert as shipping and air-travel risks escalate
The latest flare-up in the long-running US–Iran confrontation is rippling through the UAE’s transport and energy sectors. A Gulf News special bulletin summarises Thursday’s fast-moving developments: Saudi forces struck 82 Houthi targets after fresh missile attacks on Riyadh and Abha airports; a tanker was hit by projectiles off Qatar’s coast; and Iran and Oman announced “safe transit routes” through the Strait of Hormuz, a move immediately down-played by US Central Command. For UAE residents and companies, the practical impacts are concentrated in three areas. First, airlines are rerouting or pausing selected services to Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Israel, inflating fuel costs and lengthening flight times. Second, war-risk surcharges on Gulf shipping have pushed Brent crude back above US $100 a barrel, with higher logistics costs feeding into retail fuel prices—pump rates in the UAE rose for a third straight month in October. Third, a patchwork of government advisories is making corporate travel planning more complex. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office maintains its warning that flights could be cancelled “at short notice,” while the US State Department still lists the UAE at “Level 3: Reconsider travel.” Australia and Canada advise a “high degree of caution.” Risk managers for multinationals with Gulf operations are updating travel-approval workflows and crisis-response playbooks. Many now require dual routing options—typically via Europe and Asia—for critical staff, plus satellite-phone coverage on key shipping lanes. Exporters are also reviewing force-majeure clauses, as insurance premiums could spike further if Hormuz sees sustained disruption.
