Irish Government updates employment-permit queue: Critical Skills now at one-week turnaround
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) has published its weekly dashboard of employment-permit processing dates, confirming a sharp improvement for certain high-demand categories. As of 8 October 2026 DETE is working on Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) applications lodged on 1 October — effectively a one-week queue — while new General Employment Permit (GEP) files are five weeks deep. Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) permits submitted on 5 October are already under review. The data matter for multinationals because a work permit must be issued before an employee can apply for an Irish entry visa or travel under the visa-waiver scheme. In recent years the Critical Skills queue ballooned to more than 10 weeks, causing project delays in technology and life-sciences firms. DETE attributes the recent acceleration to extra case-officers funded in Budget 2026 and the rollout of AI-assisted document checks. Not all categories are moving quickly: renewals are still stuck at files received on 17 July 2026, and Reviews/Appeals are languishing at late-April submissions. Employers planning contract extensions should therefore file renewal paperwork at least three months before expiry to avoid an unintended gap in permission. Immigration advisers point out that these figures are a snapshot, not a service standard. “Queues can go backwards after public-holiday backlogs,” warns Fiona Downey of PwC Ireland. But the new data give HR teams a realistic basis for start-date planning: with a five-week GEP queue, a 10-day visa process and a typical four-week notice period, a non-EEA hire made today is unlikely to be on site before mid-January 2027. DETE will update the table again on 15 October; companies with large recruitment cohorts should capture the weekly changes to model lead-times across project pipelines.
