Cathay Pacific released a bulletin on 8 October announcing that passenger fuel surcharges will rise on tickets issued from 1 August 2026, reversing several reductions made earlier in the year. The airline attributed the adjustment to a sharp rebound in global jet-fuel prices following renewed instability in the Middle East aviation market. The revised charges add HKD 33 to short-haul sectors between Hong Kong and mainland China (now HKD 198) and up to HKD 397 on ultra-long-haul routes to Europe, North America, and Africa (now HKD 1,362). While the filing date precedes the surcharge effective date, Cathay said it released the information early “to give corporate clients and travel agents sufficient time to update booking systems and manage budgets.” Travel-management companies (TMCs) estimate the change will increase the average cost of a Hong Kong-London round trip by 3-4 percent. Enterprises with large volumes of short-notice travel are advised to review blanket-agreement caps and consider pre-paying for August and September travel before the higher surcharge is embedded in Global Distribution Systems on 15 July. Cathay’s move is in line with IATA fuel-price trackers that show Asia-Pacific jet-A1 spot prices climbing 12 percent since mid-September. Other regional carriers are expected to follow suit, but Cathay remains the bell-wether for Hong Kong-based corporates, given its 42 percent share of outbound business traffic. The airline stressed that the surcharge mechanism remains “transparent and bi-directional,” adding that it will continue the practice of fortnightly reviews and downward adjustments if crude prices stabilize. Mobility managers should therefore monitor further bulletins before locking in 2027 budgets.
