East Midlands becomes first UK airport to deploy contactless facial-recognition eGates
East Midlands Airport (EMA) in Leicestershire quietly made UK border-control history on 10 October by switching on the country’s first ‘contactless eGates’—a system that verifies a traveller’s identity with a single facial-recognition scan instead of requiring the passport chip to be read. The pilot, run jointly by Border Force and the Home Office’s digital border programme, is designed to shave up to 25 percent off current processing times and—crucially—collect more consistent biometric data for the UK’s future “permissions-based” border. Unlike the existing generation of eGates, which need passengers to position their passport on a glass reader, the new gates rely on a high-definition camera linked to Home Office watch-lists and biometric databases. Travellers still need to carry their passport and may be asked to present it if secondary checks are triggered, but in most cases they will walk straight through once the system confirms a match. For global mobility managers, faster arrivals translate into more predictable ground-transport connections, reduced dwell time for short-haul business travellers and fewer missed onward rail links from the East Midlands hub. EMA’s trial will run for three months before the technology is rolled out to Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow, London City, Luton, Manchester, Newcastle and Stansted by early 2027. Border Force officials say the contactless upgrade is a key building-block in the UK’s plan to remove physical vignettes and create a fully digital immigration system centred on electronic travel authorisations (ETAs) and eVisas. Over 20 million ETAs have already been issued since the programme’s 2023 launch. The new gates are also expected to dovetail with facial-age-estimation software under trial for automating ‘under-18’ checks, potentially opening eGate access to younger family travellers. Corporate travel buyers should monitor carrier communications: some airlines may adjust minimum connection times once early performance data from EMA is validated. Organisations that use meet-and-greet services will want to update standard-operating procedures to account for the altered passenger flow in arrivals halls. Finally, privacy teams should note that the Home Office insists all biometric data is encrypted at capture and stored in compliance with UK GDPR—a point worth reinforcing in traveller-awareness briefings.
