The Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment updated its processing-date dashboard on 13 October, showing modest but welcome gains for key work-permit streams. Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) applications are now being assessed within one week of receipt (files dated 6 October), down from 17 days last month. New Intra-Company Transfer permits are current as of 12 October, effectively achieving near real-time turnaround. General Employment Permits (GEPs) have also inched forward but still face a five-week queue, while renewals and appeals remain stuck at late July and April respectively. The improvements follow the redeployment of 20 case officers from low-volume categories to high-demand STEM and ICT roles and the introduction of an AI-assisted triage tool that flags incomplete applications before fee payment is taken. For multinationals expanding Irish headcount in Q4, the shorter CSEP and ICT timelines reduce the need for expensive interim localisation assignments or shadow-payroll arrangements. However, HR teams are cautioned that Christmas shutdowns could slow issuance of physical employment-permit letters, which are still required at border control. Companies planning bulk hires are advised to file well before the 15 December cut-off for guaranteed 2026 decisions. DETE says further gains depend on a permanent funding boost in Budget 2027; unions representing permit officers argue that workload spikes caused by policy announcements must be matched by recurring staff numbers.
