Bomb-threat forces Air India Frankfurt-Delhi flight to divert to Jaipur
An Air India Boeing 787-9 operating flight AI2030 from Frankfurt to Delhi issued the emergency transponder code 7500—signalling unlawful interference—while cruising through Indian airspace on the morning of 14 October 2026. Indian Air Traffic Control immediately cleared the aircraft to divert to Jaipur, the nearest airport with Category C security facilities. The wide-body jet landed safely at 09:35 IST and was taxied to an isolation bay, where Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) commandos, Bomb Detection & Disposal Squad (BDDS) personnel and airport fire units carried out a multi-layer sweep. All 306 passengers and crew disembarked without incident; their cabin baggage and checked luggage were re-screened alongside a sniffer-dog search of the aircraft. Preliminary information suggests the pilot may have triggered the hijack code inadvertently, but a three-agency probe—comprising the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and Delhi Police’s Special Cell—has been ordered to determine whether the alert was accidental or the result of a credible threat. The diversion follows two other security scares involving Indian carriers this quarter and will intensify pressure on airlines to refresh cockpit procedures and crew training around transponder codes. Under India’s National Civil Aviation Security Programme, any 7500 squawk must trigger a full-scale response, including armed perimeter security and an immediate NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) to restrict operations on the affected runway. While unavoidable from a safety standpoint, diversions disrupt passenger itineraries and impose significant fuel and crew-duty costs on airlines. For business travellers the incident is a reminder to build buffer time into connections as heightened security audits can cause knock-on delays at major hubs such as Delhi and Mumbai. Companies with critical same-day schedules should monitor DGCA advisories and consider alternative routings through Bengaluru or Hyderabad, which have recently upgraded rapid-response facilities. Air India meanwhile said passengers would be reaccommodated on the next available services to Delhi once the aircraft is cleared for release, and it has offered full-refund or free-rebooking options for missed onward connections.
