Canada overhauls Express Entry CRS to reward high-wage Canadian experience
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has unveiled the most far-reaching recalibration of the Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) since the platform’s 2015 debut. Beginning 11 November 2026, candidates will receive extra CRS points if they either 1) have at least one year of eligible Canadian work experience in a “high-wage occupation” or 2) hold a qualifying job offer in such an occupation. A high-wage occupation is defined as any National Occupation Classification (NOC) role with a median wage at least 1.3-times the national median, a list IRCC will publish and update annually. IRCC is simultaneously scrapping the long-criticised requirement for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) on those job offers. Officers will still vet offers for genuineness and anti-fraud safeguards, but employers will avoid the multi-month LMIA process—an enormous administrative win for corporate mobility teams seeking to relocate talent quickly. Existing Express Entry profiles will be auto-recalculated under the new grid; draws will pause for up to two weeks while the changes propagate. The ministry argues the reforms will sharpen Canada’s competitive edge for global talent by shifting points toward factors proven to correlate with strong earnings and retention. Internal studies show immigrants with in-Canada work experience earn 17 % more after five years than peers without it, and those in high-wage jobs earn 29 % more. Employers in engineering, skilled trades, health care, tech and education—sectors already facing acute shortages—stand to benefit most. Practically, multinationals should review their foreign staff’s NOC codes and wage levels now. Employees falling into the new high-wage list could see their CRS jump by 50–200 points, vaulting them above the current invitation cut-offs. HR teams should also revisit mobility policies: without the LMIA barrier, an intra-company transfer plus a qualifying job offer may become the fastest permanent-residence path for many workers. For candidates, the advice is simple—update your profile with any qualifying offer before 11 November so the points are added at the first re-calculation.
