Hong Kong issues cross-boundary travel advisory as Chung Yeung crowds build
In a separate advisory also released on October 16, the Transport Department warned that all land boundary control points—not only Huanggang Port—will see a sharp uptick in passenger and vehicle flows from October 16 to 19. The department predicts the heaviest inbound queues on Monday evening (October 19) and advises travellers to build in extra buffer time or travel in off-peak windows. Service enhancements extend well beyond buses. MTR will add trains on the East Rail Line, the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link will run extra short-haul services to Futian and Shenzhenbei, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge “Gold Bus” shuttle will cut its peak-hour headway to about one minute. PTOs have been told to bring in spare vehicles and extra frontline staff, while the TD will push live waiting-time data via radio, TV and digital platforms. The department also highlighted possible lane closures at Shenzhen Bay Port for private cars and the closure of Zhuhai’s temporary link bridge near the HZMB, urging motorists to follow variable-message signs and obey Mainland traffic controls. Real-time traffic snaps for both Hong Kong and Zhuhai plazas can now be checked in the HKeMobility app or on specified WeChat accounts. For corporates that move goods or staff on tight schedules, the notice is a reminder to revise logistics plans. Freight forwarders using cross-boundary trucks should prepare alternative routings, while HR departments may wish to approve flexible hours or remote work for staff who live in Shenzhen. After a year of steadily rising cross-border volumes, the advisory underscores just how dependent Hong Kong is on seamless ground links to Mainland partners and how quickly congestion can ripple through supply chains if left unmanaged.
