DETE update shows employment-permit decisions now inside five weeks for Critical Skills route
The Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment (DETE) has refreshed its “current processing dates” page, confirming that Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) applications received as recently as 12 October 2026 are already in workflow. That represents a decision horizon of just five weeks—an unprecedented pace compared with the eight-to-twelve-week cycle seen at the start of the year. General Employment Permit (GEP) files are currently at 16 September, with intra-company-transfer (ICT) permits moving on 14 October submissions. The acceleration follows a year-long overhaul of DETE’s back-office systems, including full rollout of the e-Permit portal, additional decision-maker recruitment and the removal of paper-based Trusted-Partner renewals. For multinational employers, the gains are tangible: Irish start-dates can now be aligned with global project timelines without long ‘bench’ periods or costly bridging assignments in the UK or mainland Europe. In practice the headline dates are a leading indicator rather than a guarantee. Files that trigger a labour-market-needs test—or whose employers fail the 50:50 local-labour ratio—may be parked for additional verification, and DETE’s published figures do not include the optional review/appeal stage, which is still working off April dossiers. Nevertheless, mobility vendors report a marked improvement in client confidence, with several US tech firms reinstating Ireland as their EMEA landing hub after diverting talent to the Netherlands in 2025. DETE advises applicants to monitor the page weekly and to upload any requested clarifications within five working days to avoid the file slipping behind newer submissions. HR teams are also reminded that CSEP holders may—thanks to the 2024 Employment Permits Act—apply to change employer after nine months, adding flexibility but also competition for in-demand talent. Overall, the faster cadence strengthens Ireland’s pitch as a friction-light destination for high-skill staff at a time when other EU states are tightening quotas; but planners should continue to allow at least six weeks from file submission to entry clearance for complex cases.
