Fedasil to deactivate 560 places for unaccompanied minors, putting 53 Brussels jobs at risk
Belgium’s federal reception agency Fedasil confirmed on 21 October that it will deactivate 560 accommodation places reserved for unaccompanied minor asylum-seekers, citing a sustained drop in arrivals since 2023. The move affects several centres in the Brussels-Capital Region—including Bordet, Oudergem and Neder-Over-Heembeek—as well as sites in Wallonia. While part of the capacity will be converted for families and single adult men, the remainder will be taken offline, triggering what unions say is the equivalent of 53 full-time job losses. Staff at two Brussels facilities staged spontaneous work stoppages after the announcement, and the socialist union ACOD has filed an indefinite strike notice demanding negotiations with the federal government. Fedasil characterised the downsizing as “dynamic management” designed to keep the network flexible and avoid permanent closures. Spokesperson Filip Van der Elst stressed that internal redeployment would be explored before redundancies, but unions argue that previous rounds of cuts offer little precedent for large-scale reassignments. For companies that rely on local NGOs and Fedasil centres to support community-engagement or corporate-social-responsibility programmes, the restructuring may disrupt volunteer schedules and beneficiary referrals. HR teams should also be mindful that any tightening of reception capacity can feed public debate about wider migration policy, potentially influencing the political climate around business immigration. The episode is a reminder that global mobility considerations extend beyond visa processing to the on-the-ground infrastructure that supports newcomers. Even with lower asylum inflows, sudden capacity shifts can create operational and reputational challenges for employers with a high public profile in Belgium.
