Heathrow Airport reported a year-on-year fall of 5 % in April traffic to 6.7 million passengers, blaming the closure of Iranian and neighbouring airspace for sharp reductions on Middle-East routes. Travel between London and the region plunged more than 50 %, according to a press release and Reuters briefing issued on 11 May. Paradoxically, hub connectivity cushioned the blow: transfer traffic through Heathrow jumped 10 % as carriers rerouted long-haul flights to Asia and Oceania via the UK. Chief Executive Thomas Woldbye said the figures proved “the resilience of a global hub that can quickly absorb displaced demand.” Cargo volumes held steady, emphasising Heathrow’s role in supply chains. The airport will review its 2026 forecast in June but called the current situation “short-term disruption.” Nevertheless, reduced frequencies to the Gulf are already complicating itineraries for energy, defence and construction executives who rely on same-day connections. Travel managers report longer door-to-door times and higher fares on London–Dubai and London–Doha sectors. From a mobility standpoint, organisations should monitor airline schedule changes weekly, build extra connection buffers and verify that employees have flexible ticket conditions. Shippers moving time-critical parts through Heathrow may also need to consider alternative hubs such as Amsterdam or Frankfurt until Middle-East corridors stabilise.
