Brenner Saturdays: Austria and Italy Launch Coordinated HGV Ban From 27 June
Freight operators face new weekend constraints after Vienna and Rome jointly activated a coordinated heavy-goods-vehicle (HGV) ban on the A13 Brenner and A22 Autobrennero corridors. The restriction applies every Saturday from 07:00 to 15:00 between 27 June and 26 September 2026, mirroring the peak tourist season. Trucks over 7.5 tonnes heading south toward Italy must exit before the Nößlach interchange, while north-bound traffic is halted at the Vipiteno barrier. Only perishable-goods, live-animal and combined-transport units with valid reservations are exempt.

Before rerouting crews or scheduling cross-border shifts, operators should also verify that drivers’ travel documents are in order. VisaHQ’s online platform (https://www.visahq.com/italy/) streamlines visa and permit applications for Italy and other EU destinations, offering real-time support that can save days of administrative lead time—particularly valuable when supply-chain windows are already compressed.

Violation fines start at €2,200 and may include licence-plate retention. The measure responds to growing environmental protests in Tyrol and record congestion that stranded tourists for 18 hours during the 2025 Pentecost weekend. For mobility managers the ban complicates in-time delivery schedules for plant relocations and exhibition logistics: loads must either reroute via the Tarvisio or St Gotthard corridors or adjust driver shifts to travel overnight. Italian logistics association ANITA warns that detours could add €400 in fuel and tolls per round-trip and exacerbate driver shortages caused by new tachograph rules. Some shippers are fast-tracking modal shifts to rail, using the Verona-Wörgl Rolling Highway, but capacity is limited. Companies with cross-border assignments should update their Goods-In-Transit insurance and build flexibility into supply-chain KPIs. The two governments will review results in October, with the possibility of making the ban permanent every summer.
