British Columbia led on innovation: its July 16 draw under the “Innovate – High Economic Impact” category selected 569 applicants, splitting the pool between a wage-based stream (C$58 per-hour minimum) and a traditional points-based stream that bottomed out at 132 points—the lowest Innovate threshold to date. The province’s enlarged 2026 nomination quota of 5,254 is allowing BC to experiment with more granular selection criteria aimed at tech and clean-energy talent. Alberta, meanwhile, ran two rounds under its Advantage Immigration Program on July 14 and 15, issuing 884 invitations. The main Alberta Opportunity Stream draw accepted candidates with a record-low Expression-of-Interest score of 53, signalling a willingness to reach deeper into the talent pool amid lingering skills shortages in construction and agriculture. A smaller Dedicated Health Care Pathway draw issued 51 invitations at a score of 52, underscoring Alberta’s push to fast-track foreign physicians and nurses. For employers, the back-to-back draws mean quicker access to permanent-residence candidates already working in the provinces on postgraduate or employer-specific work permits. Mobility managers should flag invited staff to ensure invitations are actioned within the standard 30-to-60-day window and to plan bridging work-permit extensions where needed. Strategically, the draws highlight a broader realignment: with federal Express Entry category-based invitations now heavily focused on targeted occupations, provinces are using their autonomy to fill regional gaps rapidly, sometimes at markedly lower CRS-equivalent scores. Expect other jurisdictions—Ontario and Saskatchewan in particular—to respond with their own mid-summer draws.
