Paris Metro line 8 skips République from 22 July 2026 until April 2027

Business travellers landing in Paris this summer will need to rethink their daily commute: from Wednesday 22 July 2026 trains on Metro line 8 no longer call at the busy République interchange and will not do so until April 2027. The closure is part of a multi-year renewal of the station’s electrical, ventilation and passenger-information systems ahead of the 2027 World Expo bid. RATP engineers must replace century-old cabling and install wider platforms to cope with post-pandemic passenger growth. Because the works cut directly through the central vault, all line-8 trains are routed through a bypass tunnel without stopping. Lines 3, 5, 9 and 11 continue to serve République, but cross-platform transfers to line 8 are impossible. For corporate mobility managers the disruption is significant: République is the second-busiest station for travellers inter-connecting between the eastern business district and the Left Bank’s innovation cluster. RATP estimates that 48,000 daily riders will need to divert via Bastille, Strasbourg–Saint-Denis or Opéra; average journey times increase by seven to twelve minutes. To soften the blow, Navigo subscribers can request automatic fare credits of up to €20 a month if their door-to-door commute lengthens by more than 15 minutes. Travellers connecting from CDG or Orly airports via RER B/D should note that those lines also undergo summer closures, concentrating even more travellers on the surviving axes. Eurostar recommends allowing an extra 45 minutes when transferring between Gare du Nord and left-bank meetings. Hotels in the Marais district are already advising guests to pre-book taxis during the morning peak. While the works complicate mobility in the short term, the refurbished République will reopen with barrier-free access, larger lifts and real-time crowd-management sensors—an upgrade RATP says is vital for Paris to remain competitive for large international events and expatriate talent.
