Without fanfare the European Commission updated the official ETIAS website on 23 July 2026, removing the long-advertised promise that the new travel authorisation would be “operational in the final quarter of 2026”. The revised text simply states that ETIAS is “not yet operational” and that Brussels will announce an exact start date only “several months prior to launch”. For Poland, a Schengen member that handled more than 49 million foreign arrivals last year, the change injects fresh ambiguity into airport and land-border planning. Carriers such as LOT Polish Airlines and state airports operator PPL have invested in automated-gate infrastructure and passenger-education campaigns timed to Q4-2026. Border Guard (SG) officials now say privately that training schedules may have to be rewritten if the system slips into 2027. Corporate mobility managers are equally concerned. Many multinationals use Warsaw and Kraków as regional hubs and were preparing to roll ETIAS cost-recovery fees and pre-travel checks into their duty-of-care workflows. A further delay means at least two peak business-travel seasons (autumn trade fairs and the first-quarter conference circuit) remain under the existing visa-free regime – but also prolongs uncertainty over budgeting, HR onboarding lead-times and data-privacy compliance. Travel consultants warn that confusion sells. Frontex has already identified more than 100 unofficial websites offering paid ‘pre-registration’ for ETIAS even though applications cannot yet be lodged. Polish travellers are advised to ignore any third-party service until the EU issues a definitive start date and to rely on official channels such as europa.eu/etias or gov.pl for updates. In the meantime, attention turns to the related Entry/Exit System (EES), which remains in force and is already causing longer queues at Warsaw Chopin and the land frontiers with Germany and Lithuania. Until ETIAS goes live, Polish authorities will continue to rely on EES biometric registration plus traditional visa rules to police short-term stays.
