Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) operated its first scheduled passenger service between Zurich and Tel Aviv in almost ten months on 1 August after repeatedly postponing the relaunch of the route for security reasons linked to the continuing Middle-East crisis. The carrier will initially fly four times a week, ramping up to daily service in September if demand and the security assessment allow. The resumption comes after parent company Lufthansa quietly restarted a limited Frankfurt and Munich schedule to Israel in June. By bringing Zurich back online, the Lufthansa Group once again offers full hub connectivity for corporate and leisure travellers moving between Israel and Europe’s financial centres. SWISS said a joint safety task-force with the Israeli authorities will continue to assess the situation daily and aircraft may be re-routed or swapped if threat levels rise. The restart is strategically important for Switzerland’s export-driven economy. More than 250 Swiss firms maintain operations in Israel, and Israeli technology companies rely on Zurich’s banking and biotech ecosystems. The suspension had forced passengers to route via Vienna or Istanbul, adding cost and up to six hours’ travel time. Travel managers welcomed the move but warned companies to update employee tracking systems and crisis protocols before authorising itineraries. SWISS has maintained its pre-war slots at Ben-Gurion Airport and will deploy Airbus A330-300 wide-bodies configured with 236 seats, restoring 1,700 weekly seats each way. Cargo capacity is also critical; pharmaceutical shippers estimate that the Zurich–Tel Aviv lane accounts for 12 percent of Swiss–Israeli air freight by value. Forwarders expect temperature-controlled cargo flows—paused since October—to rebound in the coming weeks. Travel risk specialists note that insurers still rate Israel as a high-risk destination. Companies sending staff must conduct enhanced duty-of-care briefings, ensure itineraries remain flexible, and monitor developments that could trigger sudden air-space closures. Nevertheless, the reopening marks a significant step toward normalising mobility links between Switzerland and the Middle East.
